Do I Need a Dental Crown?

A dental crown (commonly known as a cap) is a dental restoration that replaces the outer surface of your tooth with ceramic material and/or gold. It is commonly used to restore a tooth when it is too damaged to support a filling, inlay or onlay.

A dental crown will strengthen your tooth, improve its colour and restore it to an ideal shape to help your bite and smile!

When do teeth need a dental crown?

You may require a dental crown from our Calgary clinic to:

  • Restore a broken or cracked tooth
  • Restore an implant for a missing tooth
  • Restore a worn down or discoloured tooth
  • Replace a failing large filling or old crown
  • Restore a large cavity
  • Complete your root canal therapy

How is a dental crown made?

We will first anaesthetize your tooth and remove any decay and your old filling (if necessary). To prepare your tooth, we will place a new, strong, bonded core which will be shaped before taking a mould of the tooth. The mould is sent to a dental lab where a new custom-made dental crown is made within 1-2 weeks. In the meantime you will be fitted with a temporary crown.

In certain situations we can make a final porcelain crown in one visit using in-office CAD/CAM CEREC technology.

We would love to see you at our clinic for a complimentary consultation.
