Dentistry for Children and Adolescents
Although Dr. Wasik is a general practitioner, he offers great dental care for your whole family by also practicing pediatric dentistry for children and adolescents. This requires knowledge in particular areas of dental care, adapted to the unique needs of children, to ensure healthy growth of their teeth.
The service that we provide for our Calgary clients’ children is intended to promote lifelong dental health and a positive relationship between Dr. Wasik, the clinic team, you and your child. But above all it’s meant to be fun and enjoyable!
Visiting a Dentist for Children's Dentistry
It’s beneficial for your child to see a dentist when their first tooth comes in. The first visit is free-of-charge and will focus on three important things:
- Your child will become familiar with our clinic
- Dr. Wasik will take a first look at your child’s teeth
- Dr. Wasik will discuss dental hygiene and diet for your child
By starting regular dental visits early, your children will have time to get used to our clinic. This will make it easier for them to come back in the future, for hygiene or treatment visits as necessary.
If the need for a pediatric dental visit arises before your child can be treated in a dental chair, there are still options that Dr. Wasik will discuss with you.
Learning about Children's Dentistry
With early and regular visits to dentist, you will have a chance to learn preventive dental care for your children. Dr. Wasik and his team will help to teach:
- Brushing and flossing tips to keep teeth healthy and beautiful
- Causes and solutions for tooth decay and cavities in children (e.g. gentle air abrasion for touchless removal of decay)
- Tooth decay from baby bottle syndrome
- If and when your children should see an orthodontist (e.g. for braces)

Your Child’s Primary Teeth
It’s necessary for all parents to understand their child’s primary (baby) teeth. These teeth are very important for your child’s long-term dental health because they hold space in the mouth for when their permanent teeth grow in.
Proper dental care will ensure these teeth aren’t lost prematurely, for example due to untreated cavities. Early loss of primary teeth can lead to:
- Movement of the teeth as the mouth grows
- Eventual crowding as permanent teeth grow in
- Bite problems
- Unpleasing aesthetics
As soon as your child gets their first teeth, you should begin cleaning them after each feeding. Decayed and infected teeth will have a negative impact on the general health and development of your child, and cleaning will help prevent cavities and aching teeth that may cause your child to avoid eating properly.
