Bad Breath / Halitosis

Bad breath can be caused by eating garlic, onions, spices, drinking alcohol, smoking or chewing tobacco, or by medical conditions such as sinus infection, lung disease, chronic acid reflux, kidney disorders, and diabetes.

Dryness of the mouth and gum disease, which is caused by a bacterial plaque producing sulphur molecules and a foul odour, are the most common causes of true halitosis.

Once the infection is treated at our Calgary clinic, the odour disappears.

Reducing Bad Breath or Halitosis

Adopting an improved tooth care regime and drinking more water will help reduce the causes of bad breath. Ironically, mouthwash that contains alcohol may make halitosis worse by further drying out your mouth. There are, however, some professional mouthwashes that break down halitosis-causing molecules and these can be helpful in treating bad breath.

If you think you have bad breath, please schedule an appointment at our Calgary office so we can rule out tooth decay, gum disease, or other medical conditions that should be treated.

You don't have to live with bad breath! If your bad breath persists despite taking these measures, book an appointment online, or by phone.
