Biologic Dentistry

The approach we take to dentistry at our Calgary clinic is that the teeth and gums are not the only areas of importance. Your teeth and mouth are part of your body and have significant effects on other aspects of your health such as your digestive, cardiovascular and skeletal systems.

For example, a dysfunctional bite can start a cascade of effects throughout your body from your jaw (TMJ) to your neck, spine, and further. Likewise, periodontal disease (gum disease) can have numerous negative implications and contribute to other health problems.

Biologic dentistry refers to how your dental health relates to the biology and
well-being of your entire body and overall health. Thorough knowledge of these interactions and awareness of your health needs allow us to treat your mouth appropriately.

Heart Disease and Stroke

Research has shown that you may be at increased risk of developing coronary heart disease or suffering from a stroke if you suffer from periodontal disease (gum disease). This is due to disease-causing bacteria being shed from the infection, releasing toxins into your circulatory system, and those toxins reaching other parts of your body such as your heart or brain.

Smoking

It is well known that smoking can be linked to both lung and heart disease, but recent studies in biologic dentistry have shown that tobacco use is also likely one of the most significant risk factors in the development and progression of periodontal disease (gum disease). This is because smokers have a decreased ability to fight infection and inflammation.

Pregnancy

You are no doubt aware that your health during pregnancy affects the health of your baby. What may not be as common knowledge is that women with periodontal disease (gum disease) are seven times more likely to deliver pre-term, low birth weight babies than women with healthy gums.

Therefore, it is important to maintain regular cleaning (brushing and flossing) and dental checkups during pregnancy to ensure that your mouth remains healthy.
