Your Child's First Visit with a Children's Dentist

It is important for your child to see a children's dentist when they are about two and a half years old. The first visit is free of charge and will familiarize your child with our Calgary children's dentist office. Dr. Wasik will also have an opportunity to take a "quick peek" at your child's teeth and, most importantly, talk with you about your children's homecare and diet.

By starting regular dental visits early, your children will have time to get used to our
Calgary clinic. This makes it easier for them to accept dental treatment if it's necessary down the road. It is also very important that you don’t talk about dentistry in a negative way at home. Make your visit to your children’s dentist a positive experience, and ensure that explanations of dental procedures are left to our experienced team.

Primary Teeth

Also referred to as "baby teeth", primary teeth are very important for your children’s long-term dental health. Their main purpose is to hold space for when their permanent teeth (adult teeth) grow in. Losing these teeth prematurely due to untreated cavities can lead to the closing of those spaces, which can result in eventual crowding of the teeth, bite problems, and overall unpleasing aesthetics.

As soon as your children get their first teeth, you should begin cleaning them after feedings. This will help prevent cavities and aching teeth, which may cause your children to avoid eating properly. If the need for a visit to your children’s dentist arises before they are able to be treated in a dental chair, general anaesthesia will be used.

Learning From your Children's Dentist

With early and regular visits to your children’s dentist, you, as a parent, will have a chance to learn how to prevent dental problems with your children. We are also able to educate you and your children on:

  • Brushing and flossing tips to keep teeth healthy and beautiful
  • Causes and solutions for tooth decay and cavities
(e.g. air abrasion for touchless removal of decay)
  • Tooth decay from baby bottle syndrome / nursing bottle syndrome
  • If and when your children should see an orthodontist (e.g. for braces)

We look forward to seeing your children for children's dentistry.
