Which Type of Tooth Filling?
At our Calgary office we are able to provide complete tooth filling with gold, or a more aesthetically pleasing white filling (known as a composite filling or composite resin filling).
We do not offer the option of an amalgam (mercury and silver) filling because of the concerns associated with mercury, its toxicity, and its detrimental effects on your health. As a result, many people choose to replace an amalgam filling with a white filling, gold filling, or a porcelain restoration.
The material used to create a white tooth filling is not entirely free of controversy itself. The white resin used in a composite tooth filling is part of the broad family of plastics containing Bisphenol A (BPA), which has reported detrimental health effects as well.
The selection of filling material is also based on its purpose. A gold filling or dental crown is a good solution for a large back-tooth cavity, where a white filling is a better microdental solution for filling a smaller cavity. White resin is also used widely in cosmetic dentistry and dental bonding.
Biocompatibility should not be taken lightly either, and we can address any of your concerns when choosing your filling material at our Calgary office. The most biocompatible tooth filling materials are gold and porcelain.
We look forward to seeing you for tooth fillings.
